Volunteers save youth club
Volunteers have come forward to help re-launch a local youth club for eight to twelve year olds. The news comes after it was announced in July that the service could not continue with the loss of key staff.
Now two parents of youngsters who attended one of the two youth clubs held at the North Mymms Youth and Community Centre have said they will help and they are about to lead a new team of volunteers.
The 'Junior Club' is to be re-launched with a new name, 'Club 2000'. It is planned that a parent and children introductory evening to launch the new club will be on Tuesday, January 18th from 7 - 8pm.
Former part time youth worker, Martin Ferdinando says he hopes the new band of volunteers will also encourage more 'younger generation' adults to take on the running not only the club but the centre as well.
"With many of its existing management committee in their 60's, 70's and even 80's, they want to hand over and seek young blood to supplement their experience and keep the centre running for years to come," he said. At present the existing committee have set a date of December 2000 to recruit a new team. Without new volunteers, the popular village centre may face closure. Martin added, "We can't force anyone to take over, but at the same time, they can't keep going forever.
"For years they have been seeking new blood, but volunteers just haven't come forward. As a local community centre and a charity set up to benefit the local community, it does need the community to be involved to ensure its survival. Although very well used, the centre doesn't run itself and needs lots of community involvement to ensure its maximum potential is realised," he said.
The Centre has a number of fund raising events coming up including the Quiz Night which starts at 7.15pm on November 13th. Entrance is £6 per person and teams of up to eight are needed. The price includes a chicken supper but bring your own drinks and glasses. Booking in advance is essential by ringing 01707 260687 .
If you would like to volunteer or receive further information on the Centre and it's various activities, please contact 01707 260198, write to them in Station Road, North Mymms, or use the e-mail address above.
