Youth Club to close
The North Mymms Senior Youth Club, which has been providing facilities for the 13+ age group, has been closed because of a lack of staff.
The news comes despite a regular attendance of more than 30 young people and follows a successful summer holiday for club members in Derbyshire.
Youth club leader Martin Ferdinando says he has decided to close the club until alternative staffing arrangements can be made. However he and his committee members fear that unless more adults become involved as volunteers or on the committee the club will not be able to open again.
The Junior Club will continue but has had to be re-organised. Children who attend on a Tuesday evening have all been written to in an effort to ensure this valuable activity continues.
According to Mr Ferdinando, the voluntary management committee, which runs the Centre on behalf of the community, is becoming increasingly concerned at the lack of new members.
Many of the committee have tirelessly worked on behalf of the villages of Brookmans Park and Welham Green since the Centre opened in 1975 and even involved prior to this date too through fund raising and building the place. Thousands of residents have benefited from the Centre over the years and the committee, many of whom are now 'progressing in age' want to hand over to a younger generation to ensure that the Centre remains in use well into the next millennium, he says.
Mr Ferdinando has called on local residents to volunteer so that the facility can be re-launched. If anyone wants to get involved they can contact the Centre on 01707 260198. We need all sorts of people, for a whole range of tasks to keep the Centre operating.
