Local planning applications blueprint

The blueprint for deciding local planning applications, up until 2011, is available for examination. Representations must be submitted before the end of this month.

It’s called the Welwyn Hatfield District Plan Review and it sets out the proposed new framework for development in the district up to the year 2011. Once adopted it will be used to help rule on planning applications in Welwyn Hatfield.

It sets out sites for development and areas that should be protected. It sets out what sort of designs and locations are acceptable and what is not. The plan is closely tied in to the Hertfordshire Structure Plan and government policies.

Welwyn Hatfield says the aim of the plan is to; “improve the quality of life in the district by providing for a more sustainable pattern of development.”

The authority also says the plan will foster a 'sense of community' through intelligent planning and good design. Its key task, the council says, is to balance protecting the environment with promoting development.

The firsts draft of the plan was published in January 2001. More than 1,700 comments (representations) were received including 1,300 objections and 300 in support. The plan has now been revised to reflect those concerns.

You can read those concerns online and the associated revisions to the plan. These now make up the revised version of the plan, which is open for consultation until July 31, 2002.

At this stage objections and support can only be made related to the changes in the plan and not the original. The deadline for that has been and gone. Representations can be made using the online form or by post and have to be made by 5.00pm on the closing day above.

According to the authority, copies of the plan are available at Brookmans Park Library. If you need any further information about the plan please telephone the Planning Policy Unit on 01707 357532 or email
