2,000 cars abandoned every year

Welwyn Hatfield council is to step up its procedure for dealing with abandoned vehicles.

In recent months there has been an increase in the number of vehicles abandoned and vandalised.

Brookmans Park station car park has been a particular black spot.

Woodside Lane and Kentish Lane have also had several incidents of abandoned vehicles. And the woods and fields north of Welham Green still have several burnt out and abandoned vehicles alongside the bridle path.

Up to now it usually takes three weeks for the local authority to act but now council officers will be able to move abandoned vehicles after a week.

Previously, officers had to make a number of checks to ensure the vehicle has been abandoned. Now, if a car has been damaged to the point that it can't be driven and doesn't appear to have been left because of an accident, it can be treated as abandoned.

It is estimated that Welwyn Hatfield Council has to deal with almost 2,000 abandoned vehicles each year.
