Memorial service details announced

Chancellor's School has released details of the memorial service for headteacher Paul Wormleighton. The information was sent home with pupils, but has been reproduced below for those who would also like to know about the service.

Dear Parents,

The Memorial Service for Mr. Paul Wormleighton

The final details are now in place for the memorial service which as previously stated will take place on Monday, February 9th at 2.30pm in the Cathedral and Abbey Church of St. Alban.

The school will be closed for the whole day as a mark of respect. Everyone is welcome to attend the service. Pupils must wear their school uniform. I am sure that this will be most appropriate for the occasion.

The school choir will be taking part in the service and separate instructions will be given to choir members by the Music Department. This will involve a rehearsal at school on the Monday morning and a coach will take them to the Abbey in good time to rehearse at the venue itself.

After the service, which should last about an hour and a quarter, there will be a reception at Chancellor's. There will be a simple buffet and an opportunity to view the hundreds of cards and letters that have flooded into the school over the last two weeks. At this time the Books of Condolence will also be available.

This week in year assemblies Mrs Freeman and I will be talking to the pupils about the service and offering them an opportunity to write something about Mr Wormleighton if they wish They will bring home paper to write down their thoughts. These may be returned to the School Office. The pupils' tributes will be word processed and then bound into a special book to be presented to the family.

The memorial service itself is to be a celebration of Mr. Wormleighton's life and achievements. To this end there will be songs, poems and other tributes from family, friends and colleagues.

At the end of the service there will be an opportunity to contribute to the'Paul Wormleighton Memorial Fund' or if you wish cheques can be sent direct to the School Office. Many thanks to the many people who have already donated money.

Parking is not easy in St. Albans. Parking is available in the multi-storey Makings car park, or St. Christopher Place or behind Marks and Spencers. I am advised that on festival days at the Abbey many people use the Westminster Lodge car park situated at the bottom of Holywell Hill. (Please allow at least 10 minutes to walk up hill to the Abbey).

We anticipate that the Abbey will be full, which would be a fitting tribute to a man who gave so much of his life to others.

Yours sincerely,

Brian Towndrow
Acting Headteacher.

You can also leave tributes to Paul Wormleighton in a special forum thread. The page of messages will be forwarded to the school.
