Buncefield explosions shuts local schools

Following advice from health experts Hertfordshire County Council has taken the decision to close all schools within a 10 mile radius of the Buncefield Oil depot in Hemel Hempstead.

Their website states that:

"We have had further advice from health experts that the particles in the air are a particular risk to children and young people and following that advice we have decided that all schools within a ten mile radius of the incident should be closed.

This means that some schools which were open Monday will be closed Tuesday. We were working towards reopening schools except those in the immediate vicinity but this strong advice has meant a change of plan.

There is a continuing risk in regard to the plume of smoke and likely problems with traffic congestion.

We appreciate that this is a difficult situation for parents but the health and safety of children must be paramount.

The situation is being monitored constantly and preparations are being made for a return to normal school opening as soon as this is possible."

One of the governors from Brookmans Park Primary School has contacted this website to let us know the school is definitely closed on Tuesday 13th December and until further notice. The Herts Direct website also lists St Mary's C of E school in Welham Green as being closed. You can view a complete list of schools that are closed by clicking here.
